Review: The Pier Business Class Lounge

The Pier Business Class Lounge is my favourite business class lounge in the world and almost as good as The Pier First Class Lounge located next door.

Also designed by Ilse Crawford, the Business Class lounge shares the same residential feel with beautifully warm materials and comfortable seating.

You’ll find the escalator down to the lounge at Gate 64, where it feels like you enter another world.

One of the great benefits of OneWorld is the option to access the lounges of any member airline with a Business or First Class ticket. So rather than visiting the Qantas Hong Kong Lounge (which is excellent) before my flight home to Sydney, I made a beeline for The Pier Business Class Lounge.

You can see how warm and inviting the lounge is from the official Cathay Pacific promo video:

The main living room of The Pier is beautifully furnished with Womb Chairs designed by Eero Saarinen of TWA Flight Centre fame and Dieter Rams’ 620 Chair, both of which are supremely comfortable.

The Teahouse is an entire room dedicated to the serving of tea, which is made to order from loose leaf JING tea, and ambient snacks. It was quieter than the living room and made for a tranquil spot to enjoy one’s tea.

Naturally, a tended bar is available for drinks, cocktails and mocktails. The countertop is brass and has patinated over time.

Having a Cathay Delight in hand, it was time to get a seat by the window to enjoy some plane spotting.

As always the Cathay Delight was refreshing and welcome after the bus ride from the Hyatt Centric to the airport.

At the very back of the lounge is a sleeping room with comfortable green velvet day beds and dimmed lighting for passengers with a longer layover.

A new addition since my last visit was a yoga studio with video classes and spaces to meditate, though it wasn’t being used when I popped my head in.

The Pier is one of the few lounges to still provide lockers so passengers can secure their carry on bags and enjoy the lounge unencumbered. I believe you are also able to leave your bags while you return to the terminal for shopping.

The Pier Business Class Lounge Food Review

Unlike The Pier First Class Lounge, there is no table service in the lounge. You can order wonton noodles and a range of other hot dishes and are issued a buzzer so you know when to return to pick up your food.

This particular evening I went with the classics of wonton noodles and a BBQ pork bun, accompanied by a fresh pot of tea and an assortment of desserts. Each dish was very good, and I appreciated being able to get a flaky Hong Kong style egg tart in the lounge.

There are booths by the window so you can watch aircraft come and go, with the Cathay 777 replaced by a THAI 777 during the course of my dinner.

The Pier Business Class Lounge Showers

Unlike at The Pier First Class Lounge there was no wait for a shower suite, which are located along a minimalist corridor.

The shower suites themselves are compact but beautifully appointed, easily on par with a good 5 star hotel and feature Aesop amenities.

The rain shower is fantastic with great water pressure and consistent temperature.

Summary

The Pier Business Class Lounge is easily the best Business Class lounge at Hong Kong Airport and probably the Asia Pacific.

Between the wide selection of food, a dedicated tea house, power showers and a beautiful design it is hard to imagine how they could improve.
