AKA Rustythescamp
Drew spends 3 months of the year travelling, and 9 months working which is just enough to support a credit card application habit. Destinations are chosen around cycling, hiking or skiing opportunities. For Drew it’s as much about the deal as the destination!
Favourite Flight: Sydney to Darwin, the views of the outback are stunning or Perth to London non-stop, Qantas has done an amazing job with the seats, amenity and service. No zombie walk at 3am in Singapore or Dubai.
Does not leave home without: Icebreaker jacket, it has a zip for the passport and deep side-pockets for everything else. Light and comfortable and allows for extra layers underneath when it gets cold. As I go through security I jam everything in the pockets and put that through the scanner. My travelling friends David and Alan bought identical jackets.
Do you take amenity packs: Yes. If they are Rimowa they go straight to Ebay otherwise they get handed out to friends.
What do you leave at home: Usually pyjamas, I plan to get at least one pair on the way over. We keep some for overnight visitors (new in bag!), others for friends and I find the Qantas one are great to turn into rags for cleaning my bike.
What travel apps are on your phone: Google maps is my go to travel app. Blogworthy. I also have all the airline and hotel apps. The two other go-tos apps are Kayak which holds all my booking details and AirBnb both as a guest and a host, I have an airbnb plus apartment in Sydney that i need to manage on the go.
Cash or Cards: I always like to keep a float of currencies at home and take what I need. I always take extra Aussie dollars as I can use them back home and change them in an emergency. I then take a couple of credit card and a debit card. I never take a travel money card, they are just poor value and inconvenient.
