NAB Rewards Signature Card Review

NAB Rewards Signature Card  is a great way to get Singapore Airlines Krisflyer points without ever having to sit in a plane.  I am a big believer in having reward points in multiple frequent flyer programs and alliances to maximise the chance of getting a lucrative business class seat.

Singapore Airlines Krisflyer is one of my favourite programs and NAB has a great offer via the NAB Rewards Signature Card to give your points balance a boost.

NAB Rewards Signature Card

The NAB Rewards Signature card is their premium credit card with points accruing in the NAB Rewards points store. While points can be redeemed for the usual toasters and dyson vacuum cleaners it also has a great variety of airline points redemptions,

Advantages Of The NAB Rewards Signature Card

  • For new accounts you can get 90,000 points on after sign up and a further 30,000 points after 12 months use.
  • Uncapped points earning
  • Can be used with Google Pay and Apple Pay for easy tap and go
  • Bonus points at major department and hardware stores as well as  international transactions
  • Points can be transferred to a range of airline points schemes including Singapore Airlines Krisflyer, Air New Zealand Airpoints, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles and Virgin Australia Velocity program.
  • Unlike Qnatas points with most cards that accrue and are paid monthlym the NAB Signature Rewards points are credited to your account within days of any purchase. Importantly the sign on bonus is paid as soon as you meet the minimum spend threshold of $3,000 in 60 days.
  • Complimentary insurance which can be quite useful. The catch is you need to put the full purchase price on your credit card.
    • Overseas travel insurance
    • Transport accident insurance
    • Interstate flight inconvenience insurance
    • Domestic hotel burglary insurance
    • Purchase protection insurance
    • Extended warranty insurance
    • Price protection insurance

Disadvantages Of The NAB Rewards Signature Card

  • The $295 annual fee is steep compared to other cards, however with the insurance (eg price protection) it could nearly pay for itself.
  • International transactions are liable for a 3% fee,
  • The bonus points are paid in two lots the second after 12 monthsYou need to use it for 12 months to get the second half of the bonus

How Are NAB Rewards Signature Points Calculated?

Most of the Australian banks reward programs have opaque points structure and NAB is no expectation. You get 1.25 points with most purchases and additional points at some retailers. They are conveniently credited to your account within days of any purchase.

You will then need 3 rewards points for every Krisflyer point. Put simply for every dollar you spend you get .417 Krisflyer points or you need to spend $2.40 for each Krisflyer point.

How To Transfer Points From NAB Rewards To Krisflyer

The great thing about the card is you can store points in the rewards scheme.. Singapore Airlines Krisflyer points expire so you need to delay crediting the program until you are ready to use them.

Access to the Rewards program is convoluted. You need to login to Internet Banking and click on the cards option in the header, choose the rewards card and then click on the Redeem NAB Rewards points. At this stage you will also see how many points you have.

Its then a simple matter to click on the Travel and Partner Airlines link. You will need to makre sure the Krisflyer account is in the same name as the card holder.

Do ATO Payments From NAB Rewards Signature Card Accrue Points

The short answer is no. I recently had a large tax bill that I used my NAB Signature rewards to pay. There was a $90.15 surcharge for the privilege and I received zero points. It does not even go towards my minimum spend. I won’t be paying this way again.

How Many Points Do I Need To Fly With Singapore Airlines

I did a quick check for one One Way redemptions on the Krisflyer program and found the initial bonus offer is enough to get you a one way economy flight from Melbourne to Singapore.

  • Melbourne to Singapore economy 28,000
  • Sydney to Singapore business 62,000
  • Melbourne to Singapore First 85,000
  • Sydney to Zurich business class 116,000 points

You will need to spend nearly $280k to get a business class flight to Europe from Australia. This strategy needs to be supplemented with other points generating hack such as my Singapore airline business class hack.

Summary

While the card is not for everyone, if you are looking to top up your Krisflyer or other airline partner points then this card is worth considering.
