Review: Singapore Airlines Business Class A350 900

SQ362 is an unusual way to get to Europe. Singapore has taken advantage of fifth freedom rights and stops at Moscow on the way to Stockholm The other interesting fact is that it has been incredibly well priced way to get from Australia to Europe. We connected from Sydney on SQ222 and had a 2.5  hour layover in the KrisFlyer lounge prior to starting our journey.

The downside of this flight is the departure time. Scheduled for 12:05 it was running 45 minutes late. That makes it 3am Sydney time if you connect directly. The alternative is to spend a couple of days in Singapore. This will result in a very long day in Singapore. Neither is particularly attractive.

SQ362 the details

Singapore Airlines SQ 362
Singapore (SIN) to Moscow (DME) to Stockholm (ARN)
Depart: Friday 17th December
Depart: 00:50
Duration: 10 hours 45 minutes plus 2 hours 20 mins and 1 hour 15 minute layover
Aircraft: Airbus A350 900
Seat: 12D (Business Class)

As with all Singapore Airlines flights departing Changi airport you need to pass through security before getting access to the gate. They had an efficient dedicated security check for Business class.

The seat 12D was a modern lie flat bed. Having previously been in the A380 business class the A350 had better storage, lighting and power outlets. The temperature was also set at a more comfortable level making sleeping easy.

Free Wifi for business class

Free wifi is available by entering your seat number and last name. On this flight you got more than was available on the A380. I went through the allowance very quickly and was able to use Julies allowance to continue surfing.

Food Service

As with our previous A380 flight out of Sydney the entree was seafood themed. Entree was a Marinated Scallops with Yuzu Compote. There were four scallops per serving and I preferred this to the crab out of Sydney.

Book the cook

I decided to book the cook and choose Lobster Thermidor. By the time the food got delivered my body clock meant I could not enjoy it, which was a shame.

I plan to do the same trip in May and will eat in the lounge and then go straight to sleep. Skipping the main meal.

Both Julie and I chose the Asian dumpling option for breakfast. It’s hard to go wrong with dumplings from an Asian carrier.

The food out of Moscow was a real highlight. It was a simple open sandwich on black bread with fish.

Tea Selections

One of the great things about Singapore and other Asian airlines is the tea selection. I am working my way through the tea selection and had Oolong and Pu Erh tea. The Pu Erh  is worth trying due to its medicinal properties. The stewardess warned me it had an unusual flavour which was not a problem.

Business Class Wine List

The selection out of Singapore was slightly different from that out of Australia. The flight out of Singapore featured Italian and French wines. While flights out of Australia had more Australian reds. I passed the wine list through Google so these are Singapore Airways words not mine!

Champagne

Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée Brut, Champagne, France

Champagne, in the north of France, with its cold climate and for limestone soils is one of the most famous wine regions in the world in ter of both history and quality. Laurent-Perrier was established in 1912, and is today one of the best known and respected names in the region. It also has a strong commitment to sustainability both in the vineyard and cellar Made by chef de cave Michel Fauconnet, this multi-vintage wine is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier in declining order and spends 4 years on yeast lees before release. The result is a classic non-vintage wine – fresh, with good complexity and intensity

White Wine

2018 Wairau River Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand

Marlborough, in the north of the South Island, is New Zealand’s most famous wine region. Not only is it beautiful, it is home to many of the worlds most distinctive and expressive Sauvignon Blanc wines. The Wairau River winery (pronounced why-row) was established in 1978 by Philand Chris Rose. Today, they are joined by their five children and extended family. Including winemaker Sam Rose – so it remains very much a family affair. All wines are made from their own vineyards. This gold medal-winning wine a classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc-pale in colour, with a distinctive leafiness, linear acidity and overall freshness, Delicious

2017 Leo Buring Dry Riesling, Clare Valley, Australia

The Clare Valley, north of Adelaide, is home to some of Australia’s greatest Rieslings. These long-living wines are dry aromatic and delicious, Leo Buring’s legacy is based on the extraordinary wines made by the legendary John Vickery from the 60s till the 80s. Today, under the watchful eye of winemaker Peter Munro, the goal of Leo Buring remains the same – to make the best Rieslings in Australia, This wine is hyperfresh with limey, citrus notes and bone-dry finish. Unlike some sweeter wines made from this grape variety, it is an outstanding food match. A marvellous wine of purity and elegance – South Australian classic

2018 Domaine des Malandes Chablis, Burgundy, France

Chablis is one of the most recognised Burgundy white wines and its success can be attributed to its crisp, elegant style and its availability in the global market. Domaine des Malandes founded in 1949, is a 29 hectare estate run by third generation of the Marchive family. In the vineyard, Richard Marchive is dedicated to farming under organic principles and in the winery. there is very little “winemaking” involved. Ripe grapes are pressed gently to preserve their freshness and purity, and older oak barrels are preferred for ageing. Their Chablis a lively, minerally and fresh, with wonderful intensity and length on the palate.

2017 Joseph Drouhin Vaudon Chablis, Burgundy, France

Joseph Drouhin is one of the most reliable, consistent producers in Burgundy making elegant white and red wines. It has been family-owned since its establishment in 1880 and is now run by the fourth-generation – Philippe Laurent, Frederic and Veronique, who looks after the winemaking Together they make a formidable team focussed on quality and offering great value at every level. This Chablis features fresh aromas reminiscent of lemon and grapefruit. On the palate, it is dry and fruity, with mineral notes leading to a pleasant and long aftertaste.

Red Wine

2015 Château Hostens-Picant, Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France

This is a very old property in the far east of the Bordeaux region, owned by just four families in 500 years. With high quality soils of limestone and gravel, and even a little flint, it was bought by the Hostens-Picant family in 1986 with the objective of making great wine. They brought in Stephane Derenoncourt to help them, a consultant famous for minimising chemical and mechanical interventions in the vineyard, while maximising ripeness and richness in the wine. He’s done well here. This 2015 is a sumptuous wine: powerful and imposing, its dark cherry fruit and scent of dried herbs gloriously enhancing the dense, chewy, black chocolate richness at its core.

2016 Fattoria Nittardi Chianti Classico Riserva, Tuscany, Italy

Nittardi is a boutique winery in the head of Chianti Classico that has been lovingly restored to its former glory by Peter Femfert and his wife Stefania since 1982. Although it is young winery, its vineyards date back to the 16th century when it was once owned by the renowned artist, Michelangelo. The Sangiovese vineyard for this Riserva lies on a prime site 500 metres above sea level on shist filled soil. Although the wine is young, it is elegant and supple with a palate filled with subtle layers of blackberries, savoury herbs and sumptuous tannins. It is matured in large oak for two years and is built for long-term ageing

2015 Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva, Tuscany, Italy

Nipozzano is one of six Tuscan estates owned by the influential Frescobaldi family whose wine lineage in the region goes back more than 700 years, while Nipozzano Riserva, ideally located in the prestigious Rufina district, represents their flagship Chianti, the Frescobaldi holdings also include more modern wineries such as Ornellaia, Masseto and Luce. 2015 was a wonderful vintage for Nipozzano and the palate expresses this offering layers of cocoa beans, red berries and savoury spices from ripe Sangiovese grapes. The wine is beautifully balanced intense and elegant. This vintage was aged in small barriques for two years allowing the tannins time to soften and the flavours to become finely woven

2017 Delaire Graff Shiraz, Stellenbosch, South Africa

You can’t always guarantee that a delicious wine will come from the world’s most beautiful landscapes, but you have a better chance if your wine comes from the old-established region of Stellenbosch in South Africa, where soaring mountain crags reach high into the clouds, and the best vineyards clamber up the mountains until they’re too steep to go any further. Delaire Graff wines are on terraces at the top of the Helshoogte Mountain Pass. It’s very sunny there, but the vines are cooled by strong sea breezes to keep the fruit fresh. This Shiraz is a delight, not heavy or dense, but bursting with raspberry and blackberry richness darkened by liquorice, then dusted with cocoa powder and milk chocolate.

2016 Henschke Henry’s Seven, Eden Valley, Australia

Whilst technically part of the Barossa, Eden Valley is much higher and cooler than the main valley. As a result, the red wines are generally medium bodied and restrained. Henschke, established in 1888, is today one of Australia’s oldest and most revered winemakers. Henry’s Seven is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache Mataro and the white variety Viognier, proving that with wine the sum is often greater than the parts. The wines were aged in old French hogsheads prior to bottling. Named in honour of Henry Evans, who planted a 7-acre vineyard in Keyneton in 1868, this wine is a classic medium bodied red showing spicy plum characteristics and soft tannins. A delicious softer blend from both a top producer and a well-regarded vintage.

Fortified

Morris Classic Liqueur Muscat, Rutherglen, Australia

The extraordinary Muscat wines of Rutherglen in North East Victoria are amongst the most revered fortified wines in the world. Described as “liquid Christmas pudding”, these wines are made from the Muscat a Petits Grains grape known locally as Brown Muscat. The primary fermentation is stopped with the grape spirit before extended ageing in old oak barrels where they become more concentrated and complex. Morris was founded in 1859 and the wines today are made by David Morris, who represents the fifth generation of the family. This wine is brown in colour with amazing raisin intensity, power and persistence. Remarkable.

Amenity Pack

As with all Singapore Airlines business class flights the amenity consists of slippers, socks eye shades. For everything else you need to visit the toilets where you can shave, clean your teeth, moisturise and comb your hair. They appeared to be restocked through the flight so you dont need to rush to comb your hair.

Moscow Disembarkation

You need to disembark in Moscow for a little over an hour. You have the opportunity to visit the Moscow Business Lounge. About a third of the business class passenger stayed on in Moscow.

Summary

SQ362 is one of the best priced business class flights from Europe to Australia. It has great wine and food selection and the stopover in Moscow is not too taxing.
