Review: Yotel Singapore Changi Airport

With a twelve hour overnight layover in Singapore Changi Airport and 7am Singapore Airlines flight the next day, we recently wanted to stay at a convenient airport hotel. Staying at the airport saves both time, plus any taxi or transport costs.  Our review of Yotel Singapore shows that a tiny 10m2 can have everything you need and nothing you dont.

What accomodations options are there in Singapore

There are three options to stay at Singapore Changi Airport: Yotel, Crowne Plaza or Changi Airport Transit Hotel (Airside). We chose Yotel mainly because of price, its landside Jewel location but also it just looked different. We booked through the Qantas website and paid AUD161 which we thought was a pretty good deal. Normally we recommend to never to prepay for hotels but this was a last minute booking.

Singapore Airlines 48 hour check in tip

We had just arrived with Jetstar from Penang and were heading to Sydney with Singapore Airlines so did not have the opportunity to push our bags through. One of the great advantages of flying with Singapore Airlines is that you can check in up to 48 hours in advance. Checking our bags in meant we did not need to try and squeeze our bags into the tiny Yotel room.

Where is Yotel located in Jewel?

Jewel is connected to terminal three via walkways so it is easy to get around. The Yotel is located on level 4 in Jewel, the food and shopping mecca attached to the Changi Airport. This means you can check in to your room at Yotel and head straight back out for retail therapy.

Yotel is also well located to watch the monstrous water display inside of Jewel. For dinner we chose A&W, the American burger chain. There was a 10 minute queue to get a seat, that was about half the length of our other choice Shake Shack. Of course there are plenty of other more sophisticated food options.

Review Yotel Singapore

The room is called a cabin and is tiny

The rooms are called cabins, the cabin has a bed hard against a wall which was in an upright position when we arrived. There is a button that can be used to lower the bed to a sleeping position. When the person who is sleeping hard against the wall wants to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night they need to climb over the other sleeper!.

With the bed upright it is easy to watch the television on the wall in front. As the TV is right at the end of the bed it is much closer that we are used to. Surprisingly the bed was extremely comfortable.

There is a bathroom with a shower, toilet, sink located behind the bed. A glass partition separates the sleeping and bathroom areas. Toothbrush, bottled water and hair dryer were provided.

The lighting is very unusual, with purple as well as regular lights. The lighting makes the cabin a bit more fun and less stark.

There is a fold out table and a fold out stool, which are really pretty flimsy and for long term use. Well designed shelving, power plugs and USB chargers are provided.

The wall could be quite thin as there was a small amount of noise from some of the nearby occupants. I imagine if you had noisy neighbours sleep could be problematic.

Is Yotel family friendly?

We stayed in the 10m2 Premium Queen which is great for couples but probably won’t work for families.

They have a larger family room that is over twice the size with a bunk bed. They claim it can sleep up to four adults, I just hope they have a door to the bathroom and not the glass partition of the Premium Queen.

Check in

With the novel coronavirus we had out temperature taken at check in, a hand held device pointed to our forehead. This was a step up from the Hotel Indigo three days previously where we had just been asked whether we had visited China.

There is also a self service area where you can have your passport scanned and you create your own room keys. I don’t know how you would have your temperature taken….

Check out

You are required to check out rather than just drop keys off. Check out is 9am, we left at 5:15 and checked ourselves out at the kiosk. It is then a 10 minute walk to Terminal 3 for Singapore Airlines.

Other Facilities

As the room is so small there are lounge areas located near check in that you can sit and charge your devices and read. Free tea and coffee is available. For SGD10 you can also purchase breakfast.

Summary: Review Yotel Singapore

Yotel provides great convenience and value for money. It is clean and comfortable with everything you need and nothing you don’t. With Jewel located next door you can spend time shopping, eating or even going to the movies. When combined with the 48 hour check in available from Singapore Airlines it’s a great choice.

We had such a great experience we will now choose Yotel over the more expensive Crowne Plaza when staying overnight at Singapore Airport.
