There’s lots to like about Qantas family transfers. I have been using it for years and find it a great benefit of the Qantas program
In this post:
Pros of the Qantas Family Transfers
Transfers Are Free Between Family Members
While a few programs around the world offer transfers between accounts most charge a fee. American Airlines charge AUD3c per point plus AUD30 each transfer, an eye watering amount. Qantas will allow you to make the transfer for free.
Reasonable Transfer Limits Apply
You can transfer up to 600,000 points per year, more than enough for two business class return flights to Europe. Over the years Qantas have increased the number of points you can transfer.
Take Advantage of the Family member With the Best Status
Drew is Platinum and Julie is Silver. This means that Drew can access premium flights earlier than Julie. When he wants to make changes he also gets better service from the call center. It just makes sense to book via the person with the highest status.
Borrowing Points is Free
From time to time members of my family want to “borrow” points if they are short. Unlike handing out cash there is no downside in lending points to family members, providing you trust them to repay the points. Points can be transferred back and forward between family members providing you stay within the transfer limits.
Fast track to First Class
Sometimes you are short of points and want to book the flight now. Family transfers can get enough points into your account now rather than relying on Credit Card bonuses or Qantas Wine offers.
Who Can I Transfer Points To?
While this is for family transfers the description is pretty wide from cousins to brothers in law etc. I imagine you can bounce it between extended family members. I have never tried it and don’t know anyone who has.
How to Transfer Points
To transfer points all you need to do is to login to your account. Use the left hand navigation to transfer points. Select the number of points you want to transfer (minimum 5,000 points per transfer) and the Frequent Flyer number and name of the recipient. Easy.
How Long Does It Take To Transfer Qantas Points?
Qantas transfers are near real time which means that you can start redeeming once the transfer is complete.
What Is The Value Of A Frequent Flyer Point?
During the current coronavirus pandemic the value of a point is zero unless you plan to redeem a dyson vacuum cleaner, which we don’t recommend. Normally I pay my adult children 1c per point and look to redeem closer to 3c. Win win all round
Easy To Redeem
I find Qantas points easy to redeem with a bit of forward planning and creative routing. Plan ahead using our points calculator.
Consider using alternative starting points such as Hong Kong.
Summary of Qantas Family Transfers
Qantas Frequent Flyer family transfers are one of the most flexible transfer points around. It’s free, near real time and a great way to pool enough points for your dream trip.
