Review: The Fullerton Hotel Singapore

As a regular visitor to Singapore there are three things I look for in a hotel: Location, Pool and Price. The Fullerton hotel ticks the first two in spades and with careful planning can tick the third.

The Location

The Fullerton is located in the former Post Office nestled between the Singapore River/Clarke Quay and Marina Bay Sands. This makes it a perfect place to tour in the morning and evening and blob in the pool in the heat of the day.

Raffles MRT station is a 5 minute walk if you want to go further afield.

My recommendation is less than 10 minutes away with  City Scoot bike rental.Singapore is a really bike friendly city with cycle paths along the Singapore River, thorough Marina Bay Sands, the Barrage and East Coast Parkway.

The Pool

The Fullerton has one of the best pools in Singapore. There are lots of great rooftops pools in Singapore such as the popular Marina Bay Sands or my favourite Hotel Indigo

The pool at the Fullerton is a low rise rooftop pool!. High enough so you don’t go eyeball to eyeball with passing tourists but low enough so you can enjoy the sights. The pool looks over The Singapore River and Clarke Quay, across to the Asian Civilisation Museum and the pedestrian only Cavenagh Bridge.

The great thing about Singapore is you can swim all year round and when we stayed the pool was refreshing, clean and not too crowded.

The Price

The Fullerton has the history and colonial charm of the infamous Raffles at a fraction of the price and with a better location.

We booked directly and booked early taking advantage of the 25% discount. This was non refundable so goes against our normal rules!. We also went for the breakfast option and were not disappointed.

The Extra Bits

Rooftop Bar

There are so many great rooftop bars in Singapore and the Lantern at the Fullerton is one of them. A converted lighthouse with views across to Marina Bay Sands. Its is small but not crowded and a great way to finish the night.

Breakfast

As a rule i don’t pay for hotel breakfasts instead searching out local cafes. On this occasion we had Julie’s father with us so decided to keep things simple. The breakfast was sensational with lots of options to order fresh rather than the usual Bain Marie choices.

Every day I had the classic Singapore breakfast, runny eggs with Kaya toast. Its a must try breakfast and best found in Singapore.

Disabled Facilities

With Julie’s 90 year old father in tow, The Fullerton was a great choice. They provided a free wheelchair even though we don’t use one in Sydney. This meant we could use the promenade outside the hotel and walk all the way to Gardens by the Bay.

Nearby Food

Singapore has some great hawker centers. Two of my favourites are less than 15 minute walk from the hotel: Amoy Street Food center and Satay Street (La Pa Sat). Alternatively you can join the tourist throng in Clarke Quay.

Summary

The Fullerton Hotel Singapore is a bucket list hotel. Great location, great pool, reasonable price and great extra bits. I plan to return again soon.

Drew spends 3 months of the year travelling, and 9 months working which is just enough to support a credit card application habit. Destinations are chosen around cycling, hiking or skiing opportunities. For Drew it's as much about the deal as the destination!
